Dad always says to me “make sure you always stay the same.”
It can be a not-so-humble world out there. We love our selfies (heck, I’m even trying to up my selfie game), we love our ‘things’, and we love bragging about what we have and what we think we are. We love reminding people of what we have in this society versus what they have.
Baba (Dad) is not like that, neither is the man I married.
So, as we start a new year, I asked my husband how I could be more humble. I try my hardest to be grateful each day. I say please, and thank you, and treat everyone with respect. Even those that say pretty crappy things on social media. But, I feel like, at least on the inside, I could use a little humble ‘cleansing’. A reminder that no matter where I am in life, things could change in an instant. I say that because sometimes I get ugly. Sometimes, like lately, I shake my head at the people who are becoming successful, who clearly don’t deserve it. Those that ride on someone else’s coattails and claim their rise up the ladder is truly from hard work. I hate those people. And this year, I really want to not hate them. It’s hard.
So, he told me, think outside of yourself.
I used to volunteer a lot in Milwaukee, when I lived there. I loved it. It was a nice way of giving back to my community. It was humbling too. I plan to volunteer again, this time here at home. I also plan to educate myself on how to stay humble, like leaving room to learn, and remembering my roots.. and of course what dad always says.
‘Cause you know, he’s always right. 🙂
How do you stay humble?
Even better, how do you recommend I stay humble? I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks, as always, for reading.
(and yes, that’s another selfie!)
